CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu’s manufacturing ecosystem is set to undergo a sea change with the inauguration of three Centers of Excellence set up by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation next month at TIDEL Park in Taramani.

The three Centers of Excellence – Tamil Nadu Center of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing (TANCAM) set up with the help of Dassault Systems, Tamil Nadu Smart and Advance Manufacturing (TANSAM) set up by Siemens, and Tamil Nadu Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence (TAMCOE) set up with the help of GE Aviation – will help Tamil Nadu industries to equip themselves with world leading technological tools and efficient and innovative manufacturing practices.

Services provided by these centers include expert consulting services for creative problem solving and advanced upskilling, retraining and job training for individuals in emerging sectors such as rapid design, analysis, software simulation and additive manufacturing.

Companies can also use a full suite of software and tools developed by these global majors for a nominal usage fee, said B Krishnamoorthy, Project Manager, Tamil Nadu Defense Industrial Corridor. The support of global industrial partners will be a crucial added value for our MSMEs, he said.

These research and development centers will focus on providing industries with access to world-class state-of-the-art facilities in additive manufacturing, industry 4.0, rapid prototyping and many more, Krishnamoorthy said. The Centers of Excellence concept was developed under the umbrella of the Tamil Nadu Defense Industrial Corridor (TNDIC) with TIDCO as the nodal agency.

According to sources, additive manufacturing – considered one of the greatest innovations of the last century – has been given prominence, with each center housing a unique 3D printer. The facility will help industries in Tamil Nadu utilize 3D printing facilities for rapid manufacturing of complex parts and explore the benefits of 3D printing.

The focus of vocational training at the center is in line with the vision of the “Naan Mudhalvan” program to develop the technical skills of school and college students for a successful career and life. The skills training methodology is based on immersive augmented reality and virtual reality-based experience, Krishnamoorthy said.

The new Centers of Excellence will give Tamil Nadu an edge over others in emerging technology fields, former President of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Mr Ponnuswami has said. Currently, MSMEs and local industries face the challenge of constantly having to upgrade by purchasing expensive equipment and software.

They lack the expert guidance or support system required to effectively use the latest technologies. The centers have experienced guides and teachers who will ensure that the MSMEs are trained on these latest platforms, understand the latest problem-solving techniques, use the software optimally and also train their staff in the use of these systems. .
